Weapon of War

Partout où il y a la guerre, des hommes en armes violent. En République démocratique du Congo, on estime à plusieurs centaines de milliers les femmes et fillettes sauvagement violées depuis le début du conflit. Des militaires dévoilent ici les motifs et les stratégies qui se cachent derrière le viol, utilisé comme arme de guerre. Un ancien rebelle explique ce qui l'a poussé à violer. Comme pour nombre d'entre eux, démarrer une nouvelle vie est une lutte remplie de traumatismes. Essayant de se réconcilier avec son passé, le Capitaine Basima, devenu prêtre dans l’armée congolaise incite des violeurs à changer, tout comme lui-même l’a fait.

La chanteuse Stéphanie Lapointe ainsi qu'une équipe de cinéastes présenteront du 7 août au 22 août prochain, dans le hall de l'hôtel de ville de Montréal, une exposition de photographies prises au Darfour.

Une quarantaine de clichés seront exposés, accompagnés de courts récits et d'extraits vidéos, reflétant différents visages de la crise qui sévit au Soudan depuis 6 ans.

SinglStyle is collaborating with local and international visual artists to produce a mixed-media exhibit in recognition of World Refugee Day. The exhibit will include artworks such as: paintings, poetry, installations. The exhibit will take us through an extraordinary journey through the lens of a photojournalist in Congo, who is now working in Palestine.

Designer Andrew Bacchus states that “The purpose of Extraordinary Journeys is to achieve an awareness of the journeys that a refugee will experience, which can at times be horrific, but at other times, a wonder, and an inspiration to us all. There is no doubt that this recession year of 2009 is a tough time for many, but we cannot allow ourselves to forget the plight of others, even though our own circumstances may make it difficult to do so.”

SinglStyle is in its developing phase as an initiative to utilize design and communications to assist non- profit organizations in developing countries.

Conférence organisée par l'Observatoire sur les Mission de paix de la Chaire Raoul-Dandurand et l'ACNU-Grand Montréal, en collaboration avec Droits et Démocratie. Cette conférence lance la troisième édition des Séminaires d'été 2009 sur les missions de paix des Nations Unies organisés par la Chaire Raoul-Dandurand.

Biographie de M. Lakhdar Brahimi
Le 3 octobre 2001, M. Brahimi est nommé Représentant spécial pour l'Afghanistan pour y faciliter le processus politique. Il avait déjà occupé cette fonction de juillet 1997 à octobre 1999. Par la suite, de janvier à juin 2004, M. Brahimi mène des missions en Irak. Il occupe le poste de secrétaire général adjoint et conseil spécial auprès du Secrétaire général de l'ONU du 14 janvier 2004 au 31 décembre 2005.  Lorsqu'il est Secrétaire général adjoint chargé des missions spéciales d'appui aux efforts de prévention et de maintien de la paix, M. Brahimi dirige le Groupe d'études sur les opérations de maintien de la paix. Ce groupe d'étude donne naissance en 2003 au « Rapport Brahimi » sur la responsabilité de protéger et les opérations de maintien de la paix.

Forging a Renewed Partnership for Development

Dr. Asha-Rose Migiro of Tanzania, who took office 1 February 2007, is the third Deputy Secretary-General to be appointed since the post was established in 1997. Dr. Migiro served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for the Republic of Tanzania from 2006-2007. She was the first woman to hold that position since the country's independence in 1961. Before that, she was Minister for Community Development, Gender and Children for five years. As Foreign Minister, Dr. Migiro spearheaded Tanzania's engagement in the pursuit of peace, security and development in the Great Lakes Region.

Prior to Government service, Dr. Migiro pursued a career in academia at the Faculty of Law at the University of Dar-es-Salaam. She headed the Department of Constitutional and Administrative Law from 1992 to 1994, and the Department of Civil and Criminal Law from 1994 to 1997. Her work was published widely in local and international journals.

This guest lecture is co-sponsored by the Sauvé Scholars Foundation.

About
The aim of the conference is to raise awareness about international and global humanitarian issues. This conference will provide students with the neccessary tools to get involved and affect change in their communities and schools. Students will be empowered to create change and make a difference!

Schedule
The conference will include two high-profile humanitarian key-note speakers, community action projects, and interactive workshops.  Save Darfur Canada's Executive Director, Tara Tavender, will be running a workshop on how students can make a difference in Darfur.

Un étudiant et le cinéaste canadien Alexandre Trudeau se fraient un passage vers le Darfour avec un groupe de rebelles soudanais. À travers leur périple, des histoires d’un désespoir humain grandissant se dévoilent avec, pour paysage, des territoires d’une étourdissante dureté. Atteignant finalement la zone de guerre, ils y trouvent ce qui reste d’une dévastation systématique : villages en ruines, vieilles femmes fouillant le sable pour un peu de nourriture, familles piégées par le désert. Une amitié se développe alors avec un des chefs rebelles. Mais au Darfour, les gens vivent aux limites de la survie. Et la tragédie peut frapper à tout moment

Au Soudan, dans un camp de réfugiés du Darfour situé dans un village perdu des monts Nuba, ce film c’est l’histoire troublante d’enfants pris entre les deux guerres du Soudan. Avec des voix d’enfants et filmé, en partie, avec leurs yeux, ce documentaire nous emmène dans les cœurs de la jeune génération soudanaise. À elle reviendra un jour, le pouvoir de décider si elle vengera ses parents ou si elle pardonnera à leurs assassins. Bien que marqués par l’horreur dont ils ont été témoins, les enfants étudient pour la première fois de leur vie dans des écoles de fortune, espérant que l’éducation sera l’arme qui leur apportera la paix.

À la fin du 20e siècle, en réponse aux atrocités massives qui se multipliaient dans le monde, plus de 120 pays se sont unis pour former la Cour pénale internationale (CPI), première cour permanente dont le but est de poursuivre les responsables de crimes contre l’humanité, crimes de guerre et de génocide, aussi puissants soient-ils. La réalisatrice a suivi le dynamique procureur, Luis Moreno Ocampo et son équipe pendant trois ans, sur quatre continents, alors qu’il émettait des mandats d’arrêt contre les leaders de l’Armée de résistance du Seigneur en Ouganda, citait les seigneurs de guerre congolais en justice, secouait le système judiciaire en Colombie et accusait le Président du Soudan, Omar al-Bashir, de génocide au Darfour, mettant le Conseil de sécurité de l’ONU au défi de l’arrêter. Ce film est construit comme un habile thriller. Le Procureur réussira-t-il dans son entreprise? Le monde s’assurera-t-il que justice soit faite?

Following the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, a courageous group of women banded together to provide counselling and support to female survivors and children. Since then, the group has empowered hundreds of women and their children, most recently through a micro-credit loans program. All proceeds from this event will be used to support income-generating activities for the women. You can help change their lives.

Human Rights Advocacy in Africa: Between Law and Politics

Come to a presentation by Georgette Gagnon, Africa Director, Human Rights Watch.

Georgette Gagnon, an international human rights lawyer, is Executive Director of the Africa Division of Human Rights Watch, the largest US-based international human rights organization in the world.  She leads a team of international researchers who conduct fact-finding investigations into human rights abuses in countries throughout sub-Saharan Africa, and publish reports that expose abusive governments and actors to the world.

Prior to joining HRW, Ms. Gagnon held the post of Director of Human Rights for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina based in Sarajevo.  Ms. Gagnon has also documented the human rights impact of transnational companies operating in conflict zones, such as Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and proposed mechanisms to hold them accountable for the human rights consequences of their activities.  She has co-authored several reports and a forthcoming book on natural resource development, conflict and human rights.

Ms. Gagnon has also served with the United Nations in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Rwanda and worked with the Canadian International Development Agency on projects to strengthen human rights and the rule of law in China and India.

Opening Day of the Five Days for Human Dignity festival

Five Days for Human Dignity is a week-long festival hosted by Amnesty McGill, McGill Armenian Students Association, Armen Karo Students Association, The Burma Solidarity Collective, The Spanish and Latin American Student Association, and the Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights. It is a week to spread awareness about the gross violations of human dignity around the world. There will be at least one event each day as well as people on campus sharing information about Human Rights. Also, sky blue bracelets will be distributed throughout the week, so wear one to show your support!  Our supporters are outraged by human rights abuses but inspired by hope for a better world. We are working to improve human rights through campaigning and cross-campus awareness.

Depuis avril 2006, 13 000 Africains de l’ethnie Dajo, survivants des massacres au Darfour, vivent dans un camp à l’est du Tchad. Oubliés de tous – ou presque. Pendant deux mois, le cinéaste suisse a filmé ces familles qui se réinventent une (sur)vie, au-delà de la guerre, de la peur et de la souffrance inscrite dans leur chair et dans leur mémoire. Thursday, Nov. 13: Professor Carol Berger, former BBC correspondent to Sudan, will be speaking at McGill. (Location and time to be announced.)

Four Generations of Genocide: The Forgotten Lessons

"FOUR GENERATIONS OF GENOCIDE"
- an event commemorating Krystallnacht (Night of Broken Glass)


The evening will include testimonials from the following people:

• Liz Balian: Executive Director of Armen Karo Armenian Student Association, 3rd generation of Armenian Genocide survivors

• Paul JK Herczeg: a Holocaust survivor

• Eloge Christain Butera: a Rwandan genocide survivor, McGill Law student

• Justin Laku: Founder and President of Canadians for Sudan

The Honorable IRWIN COTLER, McGill Law professor, will speak after the testimonials.

As Minister of Justice, Cotler tabled Canada's first-ever National Justice Initiative Against Racism, in parallel with the government's National Action Plan Against Racism. Dr. Cotler has also fought against genocide and impunity. His attempts to bring Nazi war criminals to justice have won praise as has been his founding of all-party Parliamentary groups to bring attention and action to end the genocide in Darfur.


Coffee and cake reception will follow the event.
