Tell Prime Minister Harper and Foreign Affairs Minister Cannon that Sudan must remain a foreign policy priority

Cter Harper and Minister Cannon,

I am writing because I am concerned that Darfur is falling from Canada's foreign affairs radar.

In your government's January 26th Speech from the Throne, there was no discussion of foreign policy priorities and no mention of Canadian commitments in Sudan.  While economic uncertainty has inevitably forced us to re-evaluate our international commitments, I hope that support to peace, human security and humanitarian relief in Darfur will remain prominent on Canada's policy agenda.

We are continually reminded that the cycle of violence in Darfur is destroying lives.  For example, 30 people were killed and 30,000 displaced in early February around the South Darfur town of Muhajiriya.  In fact, there has been an increase in insecurity throughout Darfur in 2009.

To address the critical situation in Darfur, Canada must:

1. Continue to make Sudan, including Darfur, a foreign policy priority;
2. Increase support to the neglected Darfur peace process, which is the key to ending violence in the region; and
3. Assign a special Canadian government representative to Sudan to ensure that policy in Sudan is well-informed and coordinated and that decision-makers have access to relevant and timely information.
