Where: University of Toronto
Contact: inquiries@genocideeducation.ca
Join the Canadian Centre for Genocide Education for the 2009 Genocide Education Institute in Toronto, Ontario. During the five-day Institute, teachers learn not only with each other, but with some of Canada's most renowned scholars of genocide and with long-time educators of genocide. And, teachers will also have the opportunity to meet survivors of genocide.
The Institute is designed to encourage teachers to teach the lessons of genocide and to help prepare them to effectively and appropriately communicate these lessons in the classroom.
The first day of the Institute - Monday - examines genocide generally (what is genocide, what causes genocide, an can genocide be prevented), then the remaining four days are spent examining four specific case-studies: the Armenian Genocide (Tuesday), the Holocaust (Wednesday), and the Rwandan Genocide (Thursday), which are the three seminal cases of genocide during the 20th Century, and then Darfur (Friday), which may very well be the first genocide of the new millennium.
Morning sessions (four 45-minute sessions each morning):
- focus on developing the theoretical and historical background
Afternoon sessions (four 45-minute sessions each afternoon):
- focus on classroom implementation
- teachers receive many resources for their work ahead, including several books to begin a library of their own
Sessions are a combination of multimedia presentations, discussions, and group work. There is plenty of time to ask questions and to exchange ideas with other teachers.
Instructors:
The instructors are some of Canada's most renowned scholars of genocide and long-time educators of genocide who have years of classroom experience. Among the instructors for the 2009 Institute is Major Brent Beardsley, the Staff Officer for Lieutenant General Romeo Dallaire, the Force Commander of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda preceding and during the genocide there in 1994.

Synopsis
Sergio, based on Pulitzer Prize-winner Samantha Power's groundbreaking biography, Chasing the Flame: Sergio Vieira de Mello and the Fight to Save the World, is a riveting account of the amazing career and tragic final mission of the United Nations' High Commissioner for Human Rights, Brazilian diplomat Sergio Vieira de Mello. Known to everyone simply as Sergio, he was lauded for his ability to diffuse some of the most complicated situations in countries with some of the worst human rights abuses. With his charming personality and his calm, pragmatic style, some likened him to a cross between James Bond and Bobby Kennedy. At 55, Sergio was in love and ready to settle down. But a crisis called him away one final time, and because of who he was, he had to answer. Sergio is an exceptional tribute to a rare man who valued humanitarianism above all else.

Noah's Great Rainbow is a new, ground-breaking Canadian play, infused with music, which examines the effects of genocide on different generations, races, and cultures. It presents an unlikely friendship between an old Holocaust survivor and a young survivor of the Rwandan genocide - a friendship that blossoms into truth-telling, laughter, shared wisdom and ultimately an extraordinary gesture of love.
