PAST EVENTS IN MONTREAL, QUEBEC

Screamers (documentary): Screening and discussion with the director

March 24th, 2010

When: March 24th, 2010 5:00pm - 7:30 pm
Where: Day, Chancellor, Hall, Room 312, 3644 Peel Street
Information: http://www.mcgill.ca/channels/events/item/?item_id=115184

Screamers chronicles the efforts of the Grammy award-winning rock band System of a Down to persuade both the British and U.S. governments to recognize the Armenian genocide, Screamers also traces the history of modern-day genocide - and genocide denial - from the first occurrence in the 20th century in Turkey, to today in Darfur.

Commentary and interviews with Pulitzer prize-winning author Samantha Power ("A Problem from Hell: America and the Age of Genocide"), survivors from Turkey, Rwanda and Darfur, FBI whistleblowers, and the recently assassinated Hrant Dink, a journalist and editor who was murdered in Turkey after appearing in this film, shed light on why genocides repeat.
The producer

Carla Garapedian anchored BBC World News and has also been a correspondent for NBC Sunrise, NBC Nightly News and CNBC financial news. Since leaving BBC, she has worked as an international documentary director. Some of the documentaries she directed include "Lifting the Veil" about women in Afghanistan, "Dying for the President" about Chechnya; "My Friend the Mercenary" about the attempted coup in Equatorial Guinea.

She earned her Ph.D. in international relations at the London School of Economics

Wherever war breaks out, men with guns rape. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, possibly hundreds of thousands of women and girls were brutally raped. In this film, military perpetrators unveil the hidden motives and strategies of rape as a war crime. An ex-rebel explains how he did rape. Like for many, starting a normal life again is a struggle filled with trauma.
In an attempt to reconcile with his past, he meets one of his victims. Captain Basima is working as a priest in Congo’s army and confronts perpetrators of rape. He urges them to change. Just like he did.

Filmed inside Sudan, in a camp for people from Darfur and in a remote village in the Nuba Mountains, this film tells the harrowing story of children caught in the crossfire of Sudan’s two wars. Told in children’s voices and filmed, in part, by their own eyes, this film takes us into the hearts of the country’s youngest generation, who will decide one day whether to avenge their families’ deaths or to forgive them. Though scarred by the horror they have seen children study for the first time in makeshift schools, which they hope will be the weapons that one day bring them peace.

March 14th, 2009

When: March 14th, 2009 17h00
Where: Parc Cinema

Late in the 20th century, in response to repeated mass atrocities around the world, more than 120 countries united to form the International Criminal Court (ICC) - the first permanent court created to prosecute perpetrators (no matter how powerful) of crimes against humanity, war crimes, and genocide. The film follows dynamic ICC Prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo and his team for 3 years across 4 continents as he issues arrest warrants for Lord’s Resistance Army leaders in Uganda, puts Congolese warlords on trial, shakes up the Colombian justice system, and charges Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir with genocide in Darfur, challenging the UN Security Council to arrest him. The film is a deft thriller. Will the Prosecutor succeed? Will the world ensure that justice prevails?

SHOUT, Hillel Montreal, JLSA, STAND and The McGill Center for Human Rights & Legal Pluralism present

"FOUR GENERATIONS OF GENOCIDE"
- an event commemorating Krystallnacht (Night of Broken Glass)

The evening will include testimonials from the following people:
  • Liz Balian: Executive Director of Armen Karo Armenian Student Association, 3rd generation of Armenian Genocide survivors
  • Paul JK Herczeg: a Holocaust survivor
  • Eloge Christain Butera: a Rwandan genocide survivor, McGill Law student
  • Justin Laku: Founder and President of Canadians for Sudan

The Honorable IRWIN COTLER, McGill Law professor, will speak after the testimonials.

As Minister of Justice, Cotler tabled Canada's first-ever National Justice Initiative Against Racism, in parallel with the government's National Action Plan Against Racism.  Dr. Cotler has also fought against genocide and impunity. His attempts to bring Nazi war criminals to justice have won praise as has been his founding of all-party Parliamentary groups to bring attention and action to end the genocide in Darfur.

Coffee and cake reception will follow the event.

This event is part of McGill Hillel's Holocaust Remembrance Series that runs from NOVEMBER 3-11. For more information, please contact us at efratrun@gmail.com or dan@hillel.ca.
